 The 2014 BMW X3 is one ofthe sportiest-driving yet most fuel-efficient compact crossovers; andespecially if you're not budget-limited you'll almost certainly be happy withits useful technology options and finely detailed cabin.With rather impressive gas mileage and on-roadhandling, the 2014 BMW X3 hits the crossover market at the right point for theGerman automaker. It satisfies the image-conscious in some of the same ways asthe related 3-Series sedan, while granting drivers more passenger space.Despite all the arrivals in this luxury niche, the X3 remains one of the betterchoices.Just don't expect the X3 to look rugged or outdoorsy.That, it doesn't; instead, it looks lean, pert, and graceful, like tall sportwagon--but with just enough visually in common with the larger X5. The 2014 BMW X3 continues with its all-turbochargedengine lineup, including the new TwinPower four-cylinder that was introducedlast year in the X3 xDrive28i. That change booted the naturally aspiratedsix-cylinder engine to X3 history, but aside from losing the wonderful sound ofthe six there's nothing to complain about, as the new base engine is strongerand more fuel-efficient. BMW's 240-hp turbo four is the perkiest and mostV-6-like of the new-generation turbo fours; foot to the floor, it moves, withno hesitation.EXTERIORThe BMW X3 continues, in its current generation, to gostray away from the rugged, outdoorsy look--instead following one that's morelike tall sport wagon.With its last complete redesign in 2011, BMW gave thismodel more length, width, and physical presence--along with more visually incommon with the larger X5. The combination of the pert, sport-wagon profile,the graceful, the swooping beltline crease, the tapered nose, and the chiseledlines next to the hood that actually serve to lower the beltline visually,together adds up to the opposite of rugged-SUV look.INTERIORThe X3 makes good use of that space, with firm,properly angled front seats surrounded by copious head and leg room. Second-rowpassengers have even more space--it's where the added length is mostnoticeable, and where the X3 takes the lead over vehicles like the Q5 and GLKClass.With seating for five, the X3 has large19-cubic-foot rear storage area that swells to 56.6 cubic feet when the rearseats are folded down. The rear seats now all have ski pass-through and40:20:40 segments for better flexibility and seatback folding. In back, there'sspace carved out for feet, under the front seat, and head room soars. Werecommend the sport seats in front for their extendable thigh bolsters and moreaggressive side bolstering; they may feel firmer at first but they're better inlong-distance support.PERFORMANCEThe 2.0-liter 'N20' TwinPower four makes 240horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. That's the same power, but 39pound-feet more torque than last year's engine. BMW says that the X3 28iaccelerates to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.BMW's turbo four is the perkiest and most V-6-like ofthe new-generation turbo fours; foot to the floor, it moves, with nohesitation. With direct injection, Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing andValvetronic variable valve timing, and twin-scroll turbocharging, the BMW fourspools up very quick, with peak torque reached at diesel-like 1,250 rpm (allthe way up to 4,800 rpm).SAFETYStandard safety features on the X3 include all theusual airbags, active front head restraints, anti-lock brakes, and stabilitysystems. In Sport mode, drivers of navigation-and-iDrive-equipped X3 cancustomize that Sport mode for differing levels of stability control.
